The Director of University EH&S provides leadership and coordination in the development, adoption, and implementation of all regulatory requirements for environmental and operational safety management. This is a staff position for safety, regulatory compliance, program development, training, and advice to University administrators. The director is the primary point of contact for local, state, and federal regulatory agencies with the University of Southern Maine in the areas of occupational safety, industrial hygiene, radiation safety, operational safety, and environmental protection. The director also works with the faculty, staff, and students to go beyond the regulatory requirements to build model programs on all campuses in safety, sustainability, and related matters. The director also serves the University as chemical hygiene officer and environmental manager. The director works with the faculty, staff, administration, and students to foster a culture of safety and environmental responsibility.

Qualifications: Required: Bachelor’s degree in Environmental or Occupational Safety or a closely related field. Five or more years hands- on experience conducting inspections, monitoring compliance, and responding to safety related events. Demonstrated experience designing and delivering safety and environmental programs. Evidence of a detailed understanding of OSHA, NFPA, and EPA/DEP requirements. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Preferred: Advanced degree in Environmental or Occupational Safety or a closely related field. Supervisory experience. Desired: Certification as either a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH).
