Job Description: 
As the Health and Safety Representative, you will act as a technical resource to recommend and conduct: safety reviews of construction activities (e.g., fall protection, scaffolds, etc); industrial hygiene monitoring for health and safety compliance (e.g., chemical, physical, biological and ergonomic stressors); and chemical hazard awareness for hazardous and flammable chemicals in laboratories and other areas.

Requires a Bachelor’s degree with major course work in industrial engineering, safety engineering, occupational health, industrial hygiene, chemistry or a closely related field. Requires a minimum of three years work experience showing increasing independence in responsibility as a practicing health and safety professional in an industrial, pharmaceutical or research laboratory setting. Specific experience in a Research and Development environment a plus. Professional experience must demonstrate the ability to effectively initiate and lead projects or programs with minimal supervision. Knowledge of: principles and practices of industrial and occupational safety/health programs; pertinent local, state and federal laws, ordinances, rules and regulations; principles and techniques of employee training; and report preparation and statistical analysis required; strong background in health and safety regulations and building codes is highly desirable.

Candidate must demonstrate a broad knowledge in and familiarity with mechanical systems, including test equipment. Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access) is required. Working knowledge of Microsoft Project is a plus. Interest and availability to submit for certification as: Associate in Risk Management, Associate Safety Professional, Certified Safety Professional, or Certified Industrial Hygienist preferred. Candidate must be capable of climbing ladders and scaffolds to perform inspections and tests, and must be able to perform visual examinations of mechanical devices and test articles. Employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Candidate will be required to wear respiratory protection, hearing protective devices, basic construction personal protective equipment and other safety equipment. Must be able to operate a motor vehicle for travel onsite/requires a driver’s license. Duties include: identification of job hazards, exposure evaluation and development of controls; preparation of written training material and job procedures; preparation and presentation of briefings, classes and seminars on health and safety topics; consultation with others on compliance with Department of Energy, OSHA and national consensus standards and requirements; conducting health and safety inspections and tracking remedial efforts; and conducting project design reviews, work planning, construction/experimental reviews, fabrication and operations activity reviews.

This position requires use of equipment designed to inspect, test, monitor and measure safe levels of environmental and safety hazards. Work locations may include: chemical laboratory, research, clinical facilities; construction projects; roof work; and field conditions in or adjacent to chemical, radiological, biological and/or hazardous material work areas. The position may require working after hours or occasional weekends to respond to emergency or non-emergency situations. The candidate must demonstrate ability to present ideas and concepts orally and in writing in a clear and concise manner to communicate technical information and interact with individuals with diverse backgrounds and levels of understanding including: senior management; line workers; engineers; chemists; trade workers; etc. Safety & Health Services Division.
